Before I add my 2 cents, the following is from the Epson 740 FAQ file:

A number of the high quality printers, including HP printers (and even
xerox machines) cannot print within .5" of the edge of the paper. You
need to look at the manual that came with your printer to find out what
the printable area is, and then you need to adjust your software margins
so that they are in sync with the printer.
There are also some things that are best seen with your own eyes.
Harmonie provides the ability to print using various aspect ratios, and
those are listed as Normal, Best and Condensed, and it permits either the
computer or the printer to perform the actual rendering of the page.
In order to familiarize yourself more with Harmonie and how it works, I
would like to suggest that you take a one page document, and print it out
using the three different available aspect ratios, first time around
using Internal Rendering, the second time around, using External
Rendering.
If you do that, you will see major differences, with some of the combos
printing out as you describe.
When I first got my LaserJet, I must have printed out hundreds of test
prints before deciding on two rules from which I never deviate, ever...
When printing text, use Condensed and Internal Rendering.
When printing graphics, use Normal and External Rendering.
Your mileage may vary, but because seeing is believing Dain, please make
a print out using all the possible combinations before deciding which
combo you like best.
