How are you determining the second 800k drive doesn't read? If you run
systen software does the first show up on the desktop and a disk in second
drive doesn't?

Note: in case you're relatively new to the IIgs, your IIgs will only boot off
the first drive on startup. The second drive is more for data or copying disks.
Generally speaking to utilize the second drive requires software on a boot drive
