IIgs, Earthlink & Delphi
I have an Earthlink.net account and a Delphi premium account so I know it
works with this combo, it should work with other ISP's.
Software:
System 6.0.1
Marinetti 2.0.1
telnet (application is supplied in the Marinetti distribution)
Spectrum 2.2 (optional, vt100 emulation is needed for Lynx)
The telnet application supplied with marinetti is all that is needed for
normal delphi usage, and to read the usenet newsgroups via delphi's
newsgroup reader. Spectrum 2.2 will be necessary to use lynx to browse the
web because you NEED the vt100 emulation, unless there is a Marinetti aware
vt100 emulator floating around that I don't know about.
The hardware requirement will be the minimum needed to run 6.0.1 comfortably
or the minimum suggested by Spectrum if you are using it. 4MB of memory
should be fine. An accelerator can't hurt. Bernie to the Rescue works with
these instructions on my iMac, also.
1.) Sign up for Earthlink, if you haven't yet. (other ISP's may work, too)
2.) Sign up for a Delphi premium account ($35 U.S. per year) if you haven't
yet.
3.) Install Marinetti, if you haven't yet.
4.) Configure Marinetti to call your local Earthlink dial up number. (or
other ISP)
5.) In Marinetti's 'Setup Connection' put your Earthlink (other ISP)
username and password into the corresponding boxes, you can leave the domain
name servers set to 0.0.0.0 if you don't know them, contact your ISP if you
really want to use them. I don't because I use delphi's IP address instead
of delphi.com
6.) Set the Link Layer to PPP
7.) Connect Marinetti to Earthlink. The easiest way from here on in will be
to boot the telnet application and type 'c' for connect.
8.) Once your PPP options have been negotiated and you are connected to
Earthlink (you'll get the telnet menu options on your screen again) type 't'
for telnet to location.
9.) at the prompt type in 199.92.4.65 (or delphi.com if you configured DNS)
10.) At the USERNAME prompt type in your delphi username
11.) At the PASSWORD prompt type in your delphi password
12.) When you get to the main menu you can use delphi services, or, if you
just want to use Usenet type GO INT USE USE to get to the delphi newsreader
(or navigate the menu system if you don't like short cuts).
Voila. That's all there is to it. If someone has a different ISP and
Marinetti installed would you please try it and see if it works (if you
don't have a delphi premium account at least try it to the USENAME prompt)
with your ISP? With Marinetti, Delphi and telnet a unix shell account isn't
really REQUIRED to get your IIGS on the 'net.
If you want to use Lynx then you will need Spectrum 2.2 for the VT100
emulation. I don't have Spectrum so I can't give details on that. If someone
develops a Marinetti aware vt100 emulation telnet app then Spectrum won't be
necessary.
