The IIe will try to boot a disk when you turn ON the power. If no disk
is present or a disk which is difficult to read is present, the drive may
just spin and spin. When this happens, press Control-Reset (hold down Control
and press and relese Reset) to stop it.

Control-Reset does a Reset. This will normally leave you looking at the
standard Applesoft BASIC prompt. Try sticking in some other diskette you
think is bootable and enter

PR#6 (i.e. type in PR#6 followed by pressing the Enter key).

On nearly all IIe systems this will try to boot the disk in Drive 1.

Since your new IIe is an 'unknown' system, it's a good idea to get a
Radio Shack 5.25" Head Cleaner kit (cleaner disk with fluid) and use it on
your 5.25" drive(s). Checking drive speed (using a utility like Copy II Plus)
is another good idea. For more about cleaning and speed adjustment see
