Image Writer II: Need Help!

The printer is cabled to an old Mac Plus,OS 5.3, and used for word
processing.  When printer is turned on, the carriage makes a grinding
sound as it goes to extreme left position and remains.  It will not
print---just grinds!
Living near Louisville,KY, I'm unable to locate a dot matrix repair
shop.  Trying to get an Apple rep via phone is like watching paint dry.
Prior to junking it, does anyone have any suggestions?
