You can use any 1970s or maybe 1980s music cassette recorder!!!
The only thing you need are the cables, which simply have
3.5mm mono earphone/microphone connectors on both sides.
Works great!

A german computer magazine (was it C'T or MC???) published a
program called "supertape" which was available for several
home computers including the VIC20, C64, AIM-65, Apple ][
and more. It reached 4800 and 9600 baud. It was comparable
in speed to the well known "turbotape" of the C64, but had
the advantage of being machine independent.

For proper operation of "supertape" on the Apple you needed
to replace the cheap and slow 741 comparator (mic input) with
a pin compatible but faster chip (don't know the number).

"supertape" worked for me only with a high quality tape deck.
