Re: New GS/new accelerator

All this discussion about cache reminds me of some tests
I did.

Years ago I wrote an article for the November 1992
issue of the Apples BC Newsletter, one that Joe Kohn
probably has from the newsletter exchanges.

In the said article I had done a comparison with the
following accellerators and here were the results over
GS native speeds:

8MHz/16K Zip GS 200.42%
10MHz/64K Zip GSX 267.22%
7MHz/8k TransWarp GS 159.39%
7MHz/32k TransWarp GS	175.98%

Speed increases that were most notable included operations
that involved heavy CPU usages such as search and replace,
and recalculating spreadsheets.

Here are some samples of real time tests that I performed
with the above accellerators. All results are in seconds:

Boot to Finder System 5.02
GS: 50	8/16 Zip: 34	10/64 Zip: 30	7/8 TWGS: 41 7/32TWGS: 38

Open folder (298 files)
GS: 75	8/16 Zip: 47	10/64 Zip: 25	7/8 TWGS: 60	7/32TWGS: 31

Redraw window (298 files)
GS: 19	8/16 Zip: 10	10/64 Zip: 6	7/8 TWGS: 8	7/32TWGS: 5

Drag thumbtab top to bottom (298 files)
GS: 11	8/16 Zip: 4.5	10/64 Zip: 3.5	7/8 TWGS: 3.8	7/32TWGS: 1

There are quite a number of more tests I ran at the time, but this
gives an idea.

Also for posterity sake here were the list prices of the items of the day:

7MHz/8k TWGS: $299US
32k cache board: $100US
8MHz/16k Zip: $199US
32k cache: $49US

Of course I have to give credit to Brian McCaig for formulating the
tests, as well as supplying the Zips for the testing. If anyone wants
the complete gauntlet of tests we ran I'll consider reproducing the
entire article at my website.
