Besides File-a-trix, there are some other programs which can change
ProDOS filetype:

Roger Wagner's Filetype Changer- a vintage BASIC utility
Paul Parkhurst's PMPunZip- a GS application which includes an option for
changing Type, Auxtype, and Access attributes
Jeff Hartkoph's File Manager- a GS NDA which lets you change Type, Auxtype,
  Date, and Access attributes

For more, see http://home.swbell.net/rubywand/Csa2FLUTILS.html#009 . The
same page includes download info.

The problem with getting to the Text file you get from the Mac may be
related to the presence of a resource part. Try formatting an 800k diskette
for HFS on your IIgs and using this diskette to transfer the file from the
Mac.

As for "piracy", that is just about an impossibility as long as you
stick with established archives like Ground, Uni-kl.de, Asimov, ACN Florida,
ACN Tarnover, IIgs Gaming Memory Fairway, USA2WUG, Trenco, XGS, and
A2-Caltech.
