I guess earlier programs that were released for use with either ][+ or //e 
machines (i.e. ScreenWriter) just required a wire going from the game port to 
a wire coming down from the keyboard connection and then utilized their own 
character set rather than using the original ][+ Character ROM...  I think it 
was called a "Shift Key Modification"
