Re: A TCP/IP Question:

1. If all you want to do is share files between a GS and a Linux server,
Peter Rittwage solution will work very well (still requires use of an
AppleTalk to ethernet bridge for existing GSs and Macs on LocalTalk
cabling). However unless this has recently been added, I don't think
Netatalk is designed for IP over AppleTalk communication - it is intended to
make a Linux box look like an AppleShare file and print server.
Incidentally, similar software "addins" exist for NT and Netware servers.
2. If you want to use the Linux box as an internet router/gateway, I suspect
that all machines connected to it will need to communicate using "pure" IP.
Connecting a LocalTalk network to the Linux box through something like the
Shiva FastPath will work, with the computers on the LocalTalk side of the
FastPath sending IP packets "encapsulated" in the AppleTalk protocol. With a
Mac connected to a LocalTalk network, this can be done with software like
MacTCP - on an Apple II GS, doubtful.
3. To answer another question, there did exist (at one time) AppleTalk
adapter boards for PCs, to which LocalTalk cabling could be directly
connected. I doubt these are still in production since ethernet cabling has
essentially replaced LocalTalk cabling for new installations.
