Well, I have a Kinetica (later Shiva) Fastpath 4 router.

It has two ports operating one it. One is a serial connector that is
hooked up to my localtalk network (IIGS, DeskWriter 550C, Duo 230) and
my ethernet network (two Quadra 650's, Duo 2300/Dock, LaserWriter IIg)
and anything on either network is able to see the stuff on the other
network.

The Fastpath basically has a processor, RAM and an OS that routes data
between the localtalk and the ethernet networks.

Anything more than that from me, you'll have to try asking specific
questions.
