Does John have a ROM 3? On a ROM 3, the battery is located
on the motherboard next to the power supply in a battery holder.
It is the same type of battery as on the ROM 01 and Mac LC
but is more like the Mac LC in that the battery is not soldered.
So on a ROM 3, just go to a Mac store and ask for a Mac LC
battery, then replace the one in the battery holder. On the
ROM 3, the power supply does not need to be removed to
replace the battery.
I also recommend using a BRAM backup program to save the
control panel settings. Although not a disaster like a dead
CMOS RAM battery on a PC, lost BRAM can cause annoying
problems and is not always caused by a dead battery. I've
had BRAM blackouts due to software glitches before.
