This is a problem with the Apple High Speed SCSI card and the
generic SCSI hard disk drive driver supplied by Apple with the
System Software (currently System 6.0.1). If it really bothers
you, there is a guy on Compuserve who used to work for Tulin
that sells a replacement driver that cures the problem. I just
keep a disk in the drive or leave it off when I don't use it, though.
Having a Zip disk in the drive stops the polling problem. If the
Zip drive is not in use, turn it off before booting the IIGS. Or
if the IIGS is already on, select Shut Down from the menu and
turn off the Zip drive at the "it is safe to turn off your IIGS" box,
then click the Restart button. When you want to use the Zip
drive again, go through the same process but turn the Zip
drive on at the same point.
