Have you tried other programs than ProType to remove the resource fork?
Netscape can do it - just drag the file to Netscape and "Save as..."

And what happens if you use a HFS diskette to take the files from one
Mac to another?

What error do you get? Can't the disk be read? Can you access the
files with other programs? (like, can they be copied with CopyIIplus?)

They should be... File type still OK after going through all the conversions?
