Re: newbie question-- A2 disks on PC and Apple II Games on the net
With standard PC equipment, it is impossible to format a disk for use with
the Apple II. The reason is that a PC uses non-variable speed floppy drives,
and an Apple II uses variable speed drives. If you listen real close to the
Apple II drives, you can actually hear them change speeds, much like a
CD-ROM drive.
What that all means is that you end up with timing issues, similar to the
same problems that you have when trying to format a 360k disk in a 1.2 meg
floppy drive on a PC. The drives write in different ways.
The easiest way that I've found, and it ain't that easy, is to transfer
files from your PC using a Super Serial Card in the Apple II, a null modem
cable, and the serial port on your PC. Then you run a program called Apple
Disk Transfer (ADT.) I have the file if you need it. However, it will only
transfer 16 sector type files. The Readme file contained in the ADT zip file
explains how to set it up, and it's fairly straight forward but tedious.
