You should give it a try just to see how well it works.

Copy the GS/OS boot disk. Save the original somewhere and
boot the copy. Open the system folder. Open the fonts folder.
Delete all the fonts. Close the fonts folder. Open the CDEV
folder. Delete all the control panels. Close the CDEV folder.
Open the Desk Accessories folder. Delete all the Desk
Accessories. If you still need more room, printer drivers can
be deleted too.

Now you have enough room to install the HFS FST in the FST
folder. Just look in the FST folders of the other five
System 6.0.1 disks until you find a file called HFS.FST and
copy that file over to the FST folder of your boot disk.

Then reboot the IIGS with the modified boot disk.

At the IIGS Finder, insert a blank 3.5 disk into any available
3.5 drive. When the IIGS Finde prompts you, initialize the
disk. Select HFS as the file system.

Now copy some ProDOS stuff onto the new HFS disk. See
how fast it writes to the disk. Take the disk over to the Mac.
See how fast the Mac reads it. Put some Mac stuff on it.
Take it back to the IIGS. Copy the Mac stuff from the HFS
disk to a ProDOS disk on the IIGS. See how fast the IIGS
reads the HFS disk.

No errors. Works on the first try.

Alternatively, the HFS FST fits comfortably on a standard
System 5.0.4 boot disk. I can email you a System 5.0.4
boot disk with the HFS FST installed as an .shk file. If
you can unpack that, I can get it too you.
