The Delphi guy is correct and so are you. Plug something into
headphone jack and the speaker gets disconnected. But you
get no IIe sounds.

It certainly does not sound normal, but not having a stereo card
myself, I can't offer a suggestion.
I use amplified speakers right off the IIGS headphone jack and
it works great. Internal speaker silenced. Both Ensoniq and
IIGS sounds come out the amplified external speakers.
