Personally, I'm still much happier with my real machines. Emulation
of the IIgs has progressed by leaps and bounds in the past couple
years but there is still something that "feels" better using the real
thing.

Emulation may very well be, and probably is, the future of the Apple
II but I don't think we are quite at the point where it is a
replacement for the real thing. At least, not yet, but we are getting
closer and closer to the emulated thing offering abilities that the
real thing just can't do.

That brings up another point and possible problem with emulators. I
believe that many people want to see new features added to the
emulators that the real machines don't have. Things like ethernet
connections, high resolution/true colour graphics, better sound, more
memory et al. This raises a few problems. First, with these expanded
capabilities available on an emulator, software written to take
advantage of them won't work on a real machine. Second, if the
emulator programmers don't agree on a standard set of upgrades then
each emulator will have different capabilities and they will probably
be accessed totally differently again limiting what emulator you can
run a new piece of software on.

Maybe my view will change radically if I ever get a super fast laptop
and can use my IIgs software while away from home (which isn't very
often at present) but with my Pentium II 233 and IIgs sitting side by
side on my desk, I find it easier to just use my IIgs rather than fire
up the emulator. Besides, the best emulator I have is Sweet16 and it
runs under BeOS but I spend most of my time in Windows 95 because that
is where I do all my programming to make my living. Not to mention
the fact that my real IIgs at 8 MHz is still faster than my emulated
IIgs. :-)
