Absolutely... Too many people try to pigeonhole OS's into a "one size fits all" 
category.  Every OS has a niche... Windows is clearly a great GUI/Dekstop 
system. MacOS is another great GUI/desktop OS with a different flavor.

I prefer Linux for it's network stability and low overhead. It also has the 
cool "hacker" vibe about it... You can do some real cool stuff with Linux.

I prefer Windows NT for it's rich feature set and lush API framework. Windows 
NT as a developers platform rocks.... Yes it is bloated, but I can produce a 
distributed data access component and make it public, integrate it with Windows 
NT security in under an hour...

OS/2. Best object-oriented user interface ever developed. Too bad IBM couldn't 
market worth a damn....

GS/OS... A 2.8Mhz, 4MB machine doing GUI word processing? How is that possible?

The list goes on.....

Linux is a strange phenomenon. I don't think it is going to make it to the 
corporate desktop unless the people in charge change their elitist "newbies 
need to learn the techstuff" attitude...

I remember when DirectX was released and the typical anti-microsoft losers 
basically wrote it off before they used it. 

It is just another example of microsoft technological advancements that have an 
unintended effect of gaining a ton of market share.

Before DirectX, most games were DOS based, and required a dual boot, or you had 
to jump through hoops to get it to run under Win9x. Dos games with 
reliable network support were notoriously scarce.

While I don't agree with all of MS's tactics, I do think that DirectX opened up 
the market for a whole new generation of gaming technology.
