It sounds like I have the second variation, going by your descriptions
(yellow LED, "Apple SuperDrive", no "FDHD" mentioned anywhere).
There is one point you may have missed, however: I believe that late
Apple 3.5 Drives also had a yellow LED. (I haven't seen one, but this
was pointed out here when I mentioned that I thought the yellow LED
might be a distinguishing characteristic of the SuperDrive.)
It seems that Apple switched from red to yellow LEDs somewhere between
1988 and 1991, and may have done it for all external drives.
