     Yes, for a couple years. Unless things have changed a great deal, you
first tell AOL the newsgroups to which you want to subscribe. From these you
select newsgroups to download.

     To download newsgroups, you do a "Flash Session". For a Flash Session,
your computer logs in, downloads new messages in you newsgroups, and logs off.
The messages go into your "Personal Cabinet" where they can be read and
responded to off-line.

     Right. When you are ready to send your replies and any new messages, you
do another Flash Session. (Again, all of this assumes AOL hasn't changed
everything since early 1997.)

     It's a pretty good system. (The major reason I stayed with AOL so long is
the ease of dealing with newsgroups.)  Even so, once you get used to having the
net at your fingertips while responding to messages, off-line reading feels
like going into a cave.
