The 8-bit Apple IIs have standard ASCII until you get to the enhanced
IIe and //c.  These models added MouseText which is a number of
special characters mostly designed to allow creating a GUI look to
text based applications.  There are communications programs that use
this character set as well as adding simple sound capabilities for
playing one or two voice music.  It is referred to as ProTERM Special
Emulation or PTSE.

All the 8 bit Apple IIs have only black and white text modes.
