When I was still an AppleWorks Classic user, I stayed
away from the built in Epson driver. Instead, I set up
a custom printer and added the NLQ code to every
command. This way, the dot matrix printer was always
in NLQ mode and produced some of the best text I've
seen in a dot matrix printer (at the expense of speed).
But I no longer remember the code. Bev could probably
tell you.
Double-strike does not improve text quality. It merely
makes it darker. NLQ improves text quality by "filling
in the missing dots" using a second pass of the print
head and a more Courier looking font.
