AW Six-Point-Zero
What's left to add?
Yes, I know that we've all felt that with each generation of the masterpiece,
but what would improvements are on your wishlist? Do you expect nothing
more/less than a text-based version of AWGS?
[1st] O.K., I'll admit that this one may be a bit, well, silly? I'm having
such fun with DB.Pix and accessing graphics directly from AW databases. How
about SOUNDS? Silly, right? Well, maybe not.
Just as pulling up a graphic image of a student can help keep dozens of
students straight in one's mind, it also can give a face to a name in an
address book database, organize Pokmon databases, straighten out the family
tree and identify all of those Apple II cards that you have without digging
them all out each time, so could sounds be brought up while in a database.
They could be use for birdcalls in an ornithology database, engine noises in an
automotive diagnosis database, student voices for long-distance learners dealt
with on the telephone (or for that matter, all of my aunts that I can't keep
straight), bilingual, trilingual, etc. databases!!!
How about samples of your favorite music? You know, when you know that the
song going through your head all day has "Baby" in the title, but you can't
remember the full name, you could sort the database of all of your favorite
songs that have "Baby" in the title and then listen to just those to identify
the song.
Philip Lamb's shareware program II.SOUND delivers WoNdErFuL sOuNdS through the
standard Apple II speaker, certainly it could be incorporated in to the
DataBase, just as DB.Pix has in AW5.1, and just as DB.Pix allows keyboard (the
spacebar) and entry codes (,i)into the database for inversing the picture, the
sound equivalents could be the looping of the sound, speed and even volume
control. Owners of 3Megs or more of RAM could play an entire song from RAM and
use the DataBase as a JukeBox control.
-= Just think, the first AppleWorks Whale Song DataBase, complete with
vocals! =-
[2nd] I'd like to have the TIMEOUT.TELECOMM feature back in full strength, as
it is in AW3. This addition alone would probably get me to use (and PAY for)
this newest AW incarnation. Never mind that I'm having trouble finding an ISP
that I can use locally, I'd buy it now and hope for the future. I'd gladly
take it as a TimeOut, but I expect that it would be incorporated into AW6, just
as the spellchecker and macros have.
[3rd] ABILITY TO SAVE AS ALTERNATE VERSIONS OF APPLEWORKS. This would help
us from shooting ourselves in the foot. Not all of the Apple II Users will be
upgrading, but we do share information. It's still us against the world, so we
can't afford to lose any portions of our community.
[4th] If TO.PAINT is integrated, then adding color to this already DHR
program. This is already a fast, clean program, but while it can import color
images, they can only be manipulated with monochrome tools. Also, the ability
to print directly from TO.Paint, instead of TO.SuperFonts or another paint
program, such as Dazzle Draw, would be desired.
[5th] Adding many of the Apple Commands that are included on the patch for AW
to work with Speech Synthesizers (DoubleTalk and SlotBuster's speech chip).
Examples are "Go to the end of the sentence," and "Go to the end of the
paragraph."
[6th] A little thing, but TO.Measure has never included a temperature
conversion. Celsius, Kelvin and Fahrenheit should be covered.
[7th] COMPATIBILITY WITH EARLIER TIMEOUT MODULES is a must. Whether
directly, or with some translator.
[8th] GAMES. There! I said it; the "G" word. I don't always want to be
productive in AppleWorks. Sometimes I want to sneak away and play a game, but
without abandoning my place in AppleWorks. Breakout, Car Racing, Tetris,--even
PONG! Something must be possible besides TO.Puzzle and spreadsheet games, such
as FindTheGold. DHR, such as SuperFonts, Paint and DB.Pix use would be great,
as would a text-based game. Come on; I'm not asking for voice input people,
just a 4K game that can be brought up in a TimeOut.
[9th] A DHR artwork screen as an alternative to the TO.ScreenBlanker. We IIe
and IIc(+) folks have AppleWorks to and we've missed out long enough on the
Screen Savers that are available to the IIgs fans. Since DB.Pix can already
pull graphics from any subdirectory and since the screen can be set to blankout
after a preset time (or with the TimeOut), then why can't we enjoy/show off a
little beauty on our screens as well. We promise to rotate the artwork if it
can't be made to do so on it's own (either selecting different ones each time,
or rotating the images through a sequence).
[Xth] Well, I'll save that for now. Let's see what your wishlist looks like
next.
