Re: Using a PC to write IIGs-readable files

Not directly from PC to GS, but if you're prepared to go via a
(not too ancient) Mac, there's a method that doesn't involve protocol
transfers / Trackstar cards etc., as long as the file will fit onto
a standard GS 800K floppy (one assumes that this is what is required).

1. On the PC, write your file to a 1.4 Mb MSDOS-formatted floppy.

2. Take the disk to a Mac that can directly read PC floppies.
Copy the file FROM the PC floppy TO the Mac HD.

3. Format an 800K floppy with Mac HFS (Mac HFS - Not ProDos).
    - Not sure about other net-chums out there, but Hell froze over in
the time I tried to consistently write from Macs to ProDos 800K
    floppies.

4. Copy the GS file FROM the Mac HD TO the Mac-formatted 800K floppy.

5. Take the 800K to a GS running Sys 6 with the Mac HFS utility
    installed.

Without a GS HD, you'll need twin 800K GS drives, and GS Sys 6 on a
single disk. Sys 6.0 with the HFS extension fits onto one disk with
a few K spare -(enough to also fit the DOS 3.3 utility if you like).

6. Copy/Read/Launch the file under GS OS 6 - there you go.

I know, it's circuitous, ponderous, equipment-intensive....guilty on
all counts, your honour. But it DOES work - without a null modem.

Escape-clause caveat: You haven't specified what type of file you want
to transfer, so no money-back guarantees.

Cheers,
