For the sake of argument, the same can be said about
printers that offer Epson LQ emulation. After all, this
emulation is compatible enough with Epson FX that
almost any ProDOS 8 or even DOS 3.3 program can
print to such a printer as certain Epson Stylus and
Canon BubbleJet models. DeskJets are restricted to
AppleWorks and Publish-It! (in 144x144 resolution) in
terms of 8-bit software.
It should also be warned that most DeskJets don't
have serial ports and thus can't be considered plug
and print. You need a parallel card for these models
(or at the very least a converter).
The DeskWRITER is the HP ink-jet that's plug and
print. ;-)
(Not advocating that serial is better, only that serial
is plug and print on the IIGS and DeskWriters are
thus plug and print.)

DPI are not everything. The ink also matters. For
example, I am absolutely certain that print from your
LaserJet at 300x300 looks sharper and clearer than
print from a 600x300 DeskJet. That's because toner
is better than DeskJet ink.
Similarly, the BubbleJet print process and ink is better
than the DeskJet's process and ink. You can tell by
looking at the smoothness and darkness of text and
by seeing that the DeskJet tends to soak the page
more than an equivalent BubbleJet.

Perhaps the above can be modified to say "ink-jet
printers and 24-pin dot-matrix printers than emulate the
Epson LQ". After all, Canon BubbleJet and Epson
Stylus models with Epson LQ emulation DO work with
Harmonie and ALL IIGS programs when using Harmonie.
