That's simple with ProDOS 8. You just go to the device driver vector table
and make the appropriate slot/drive entry point to the no device connected
routine. That'd take a pair of POKEs in Applesoft.

I wrote code to do that in my homemade system program which runs when I boot 
ProDOS 8. It's called BOOT.SYSTEM on my disks. I can set it to disconnect 
the 64K RAM disk and 5.25 drives, it lets me select between two startup apps 
via the option/solid Apple key, and it saves its configuration in the aux_type
field of its own file entry. An ingenious bit of work if I say so myself.
