Hi,

Sorry to hear about your monitor :(. I learnt to solder last year and
its a great skill to have and I would suggest you maybe start with
some hobby kits (i bought a couple from Maplins). Since I have
acquired at least a basic level i have been able to repair a couple of
power supplies (one of them was exactly as Michael said in the fact
one tiny capacitor was at fault) as well as some other vintage
consoles..then again making the IIGS sound cards gave me a quick
learning curve lol.

It looks like you are in Australia? if so you should have Scart (iirc)
available to you as an option and is the best current offering beyond
IIGS monitor, though i still prefer the look and feel of the GS
monitor and still use one. You can either make a GS - Scart cable or
buy one from http://vintageware.orconhosting.net.nz/scart.html

If you want a VGA connection i think the general consensus om the
forum is the current best GS option is the scart -> VGA Highway 100
box or CM-345s (http://tinyurl.com/6dny6yq) units (same units
basically..i picked one of ebay relatively cheaply when i was looking
for alternatives). There has been lots of discussion on the forum
about using other display devices so do a search as well. If you want
to see some pics of a Scart based TV/LCD check out http://drewbiegs.wordpress.com/
and look under categories for GS monitors.

I tested a lot of monitors and stuck with the smaller LCDs to get best
picture, but one monitor i was impressed with if you want to reduce
desk space and use it as a normal computer monitor is the Samsung T200-
HD (T220-HD as well) as they have a scart socket as well as most other
types for modern computing, but the GS screen looks quite blown up at
the higher screen sizes.

Also worth reading this article if you want have a play making your
own GS -> component box. http://tinyurl.com/5rwp5lp

The guys that have worked on the Apple IIe/IIc to VGA adapter are
working on a GS one at some point, so the problem might go away going
forward :)

Good Luck
Drew
