HP 500 with IIGS

A friend of mine has a HP Desk Jet 500 which has been in use with his IIGS. 
He's not able to make it operate with Appleworks, for instance.

The HP does pass its self-test; and so does the CPU.  He's using ROM 01. 
BUT, can't print at all with the HP.  The IWII is O.K.  

He's been using a parallel card in Slot 2 for the past few years.  Perhaps
the interface card has gone bad.  Should that have been done (with a parallel
card) ?  Results were good.  

Is there a serial cable available for interfacing without using the card in
Slot 2?  I mean that he could use a special cable which would tie in to the
printer port where his IWII is hooked up to.
