What would also work is a CF card and a tool like Asimov - it could
image a physical disk and drop that image on the CF.

The CFFA3k would/will make that easier since the CF or the USB drive
can actually be comprised of image(s) itself.  It can also host
virtual Disk II drives, so direct drive-to-drive copies to from a
physical floppy to a CF or USB stick would be possible:
