Re: GS woes...please help
Hi, I will leave the hard drive stuff to the experts and help you with
transfering stuff between your Apples. Well, to the best that my memory
holds out. ;-)
The good news is that you are using a Macintosh. This means a couple of
things which will make your life easier. First of all, if you have PC
Exchange (it comes with System 7.5.3, which is now free from Apple) you
can copy files directly onto a ProDOS floppy. You may want to do this
with files which you download using your Macintosh.
You can also use Apple's Disk Copy program to copy disk images (Macintosh
format) to your 3.5" floppies. This is important when downloading stuff
from Apple's FTP site. (Though they do not offer much!) The other thing
that you can use is Shrink II, a program which converts ShrinkIt disk
images into Macintosh type disk images. This means that you can use Disk
Copy for a lot of your work.
For the DSK files I suggest ADT. This works really well on a IIe with
a Super Serial card, but I understand that there is now a version for the
IIgs. If you need a working copy of MacADT, just e-mail me and I will
get it to you in the next couple of days. For some reason the copy at
Asimov does not seem to work. :-( But you will still need to download
the PC version for details on installing ADT on your Apple II, and for
the disk image of ADT.
Once you have that working you can get stuff between your Apples and
Macintoshes. Here are suggestions which may make your life easier:
* Download and install ShrinkIt and GSHK on your Apples.
* Do the same for BSCIT. (Access to other encoded files.)
* It may be worth while setting up an AppleTalk network while
you are trying to get your hard drives working. It is no slower
than the floppy drive, and much more quiet!
Most of this software should be available at ftp.apple.com, and your
local Asimov or Cabi mirror. Since tarnover went down, I have not
really kept track of it. It seems like ground has all of the
interesting stuff anyway.
Byron.
