Good description, but backwards. Charge will flow from negative to
positive.
Positive charge means it is 'short' of electrons, negative charge means it
has extra electrons. The extra electrons flow from the negative pole to
the 'electron holes' at the positive pole.
In an electric circuit, electrons flow from negative to positive. By
convention, current flows from positive to negative, ie opposite from the
electron flow.
In the discussions of AC current, remember that the +/- voltages are
measured relative to 'ground', not necessarily hot and neutral. Also, the
voltages are RMS voltages, not peak to peak. In a good AC circuit, in
the USA for example, the RMS voltage hot - ground is ~120V; the RMS
voltage neutral - ground should be 0. The DC voltage neutral - ground
should also be 0 volts. I think, but do not know so this is a conjecture,
the GFI (ground fault interruptor) detects this DC voltage between neutral
and ground as an indication of a fault between neutral and ground - ie,
they are not at the same potential (voltage) and thus represent a shock
hazard. Since in a good circuit, neutral and ground are connected there
is no potential difference and no shock hazard.
I think this thread is over, but if not, it should be moved to a
non-apple2 newsgroup. (Yes, we know the ? came up because a user wants to
install an apple2 into his car.)
In spite of this minimal knowledge of electricity, I still have problems
getting my Christmas tree light strings to work, even when they are
plugged into the wall outlet. ;-)
