If I had the time I'd try to track them down myself too. The fact
remains, though, that until someone does track them down, asks them
and they reclassify the software, the software license agreement is
still in effect for a very long time.

You're assuming things again. You don't know that they quit worrying.

Again you are assuming things. How do you know I haven't stopped
anyone from pirating? I know of at least one instance where I made
someone question what they intended to do and he has since tried to
find another way to do what he wanted.

If I can be allowed to throw some conjecture into the thread, I
imagine my posts have probably stopped some new subscribers to this
newsgroup from _starting_ to pirate stuff. In many cases, I imagine
people just don't realize that it is against the law. Especially with
all those sites on the web spreading lies about "Abandonware".

I'm pretty sure I've been participating here longer than you have. I
started reading this newsgroup about 8 years ago and I've never
stopped so I would say that your statement that I "just hop over here
from Delphi" isn't accurate.

The onus is not on the copyright holder to pursue all copyright
violations. The onus is on the public to not infringe on copyrights.
By the way, charges can be laid whether or not the copyright holder
even knows that someone is infringing on their rights. It is like the
situation where if a police officer sees someone breaking into a
house, he can arrest and charge them without the house owner ever
knowing or complaining.

Also, it is up to every citizen of a society to help uphold the laws
of that society. If you see a crime being committed, you are obliged
by law to report it. If you don't, you too can be charged. In the
example above, if you see someone breaking into a house and don't
report it and the authorities find out, you can be charged with
abetting. I may not be reporting it to the authorities (I'm Canadian
and most of the sites in question are on American soil) so I do the
next best thing. I raise awareness about the crime so that I won't be
accused of abetting and so others can do the right thing.
