The courtesty of asking to reprint a quote is based not only on good manners,
but on good sense. In the olden days on Genie, some article writers and
newsletter editors freely lifted story ideas and quotes. It was flattering at
first, but after a while, it got old and many of us complained. They would say
"Beverly Cadieux writes..." as if I had sat down and written that publication a
letter. I didn't. I had posted an off-the cuff remark on a bulettin board at 3
am. They took it and ran with it. A similar incident is how I met Joe Kohn.
Now, Joe and I are finally on speaking terms after a lapse of nearly 10 years.
At first we were taken as complainers (which we were), but then, one of the
good old boy network got quoted, and the infomation published was erroneous -
maybe dangerous to the system. A correction was posted on the bulletin board,
but the correction didn't get printed in the publication, which went out to
thousands of people. So finally the publications started asking permission.
That's the deal, it's not just a courtesy.
