If memory serves, everyone involved with small computers
just knew about Byte.  After all, it was about the only
serious magazine around in those days if you really wanted
to dig into the hardware (and, to a lesser extent,
software). And, of course, there were the lush Cromemco ads.

I probably learned about it from a dBASE users group or just
hanging around with others who were interested.
