An "Apple 512", I guess, is an early (512k) Mac? One thing to try is cleaning
your drive head(s).
You can use a 3.5" Head Cleaner Kit available from Radio Shack. (You get a
3.5" head cleaner disk plus cleaning fluid.) This is about the only reasonably
safe way to clean the heads on a 3.5" drive. Probably, sticking the Head Cleaner
disk into the drive and doing a boot will give you enough spin time. You want
around 10-20 seconds (much more could build up heat and damage head mounting).
Since this is an Apple II newsgroup, you might want to check with a Mac
newsgroup, such as comp.sys.mac.system . Good luck with getting your system going!
