Boy do I resonate with that... after sweating blood for three years
buying, trying out and then discarding junky software in an effort
to get my 1980 Apple II Plus to work reliably and usefully, I spent
the next eight or nine years happily using THREE programs on it (a
word processor, a vt-100 terminal emulator and a disk utility) [*]
and all was well.
Then I went modern and started collecting Apple IIgs computers and
buying all the bits and pieces to make them "the ultimate" Apple IIs.
When I was done, I had an excellent model of a modern computer -- but
only a model. "Gold Plated Pinto" is not a bad description.
After years of suffering crashes, freezes, impossible hardware hacks,
frustrating incompatibilities and a dearth of good software, I bought
a G3 Macintosh. Surely, I thought, the Mac by now must be a mature
and reliable system.
No such luck. I am now suffering through crashes, freezes, impossible
hardware hacks, frustrating incompatibilities and a dearth of good
software, but now at a much higher level of expense and complexity.
No I'm not going to try pee cees and Windoze; I get enough of that at
work. I may have to chuck my computer collection and go back to sports
cars as a hobby, though.
