List of AppleWorks 5.1 features (when updating from AppleWorks 3.0) �(Long)
What new features will I get if I upgrade to AppleWorks 5.1?
Requires a minimum of 3.5" drive, 256k enhanced IIe (65c02 and MouseText),
Apple IIc, Apple IIc+, or Apple IIGS. Also available on 5.25" disks for copying
to hard drive.
TimeOut is built-in, and TimeOut Utilities is included with AppleWorks 5.1. A
TimeOut Updater (included) updates other Beagle Bros TimeOut accessories you
already own: SuperFonts, SideSpread, DeskTools, DeskTools II, PowerPack,
Thesaurus, Graph, etc.
Full UltraMacros macro program included, allowing new Open-Apple commands ,
macro recording, plus advanced programming/debugging techniques. User-defined
macros may be saved as TimeOut accessories. Macros which worked with AppleWorks
3 are fully compatible, with minor changes. Need help updating macros? Ask
TEXAS II.
Full support for dates beyond year 2000, with date calculations. (Note: there
is one Y2K bug, for which we have a bug-fix available.)
Desktop Organizer features :
Three smoothly integrated desktops, allowing up to 36 files
Three separate clipboards, for Word Processor, Data Base, and Spreadsheet.
Clipboards can be edited and printed
Append to clipboard option allows adding to clipboard data
Built-in Disk/File utilities for copy, delete, rename, lock, format, etc
Full Mouse support
On-screen clock display, plus a timer for screen-blanking and auto-save in
computers which have a clock
Optional backup saves a second, backup copy when files are saved
AfterWork decorative screen blankers allow starbursts, pics, others
Allows five printers instead of three allowed in AppleWorks 3.0
Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 500-600 series support built-in
Add files lists 250 files instead of 170
Add files lists Text files and loads them as Word Processor files
OA-A arrange in file listings allows sorts by file date, type, name
Optional Alarms may be set to alert the user to appointments
Built-in Print buffer (optional) allows you to work while printing
Desktop shortcuts such as <.OA-Q OA-S> jump to other menus, clipboards, and
drive lists. Many are undocumented; ask TEXAS II
Many new Standard Settings, such as default word processor margins, Yes/No
questions reversed, MouseText or normal display, and hotkeys
Any currency character may be set for $, commas, and decimals
Randy's Free Patcher (included with AppleWorks 5) allows even more custom
options. Bev's Free Patcher adds hundreds more
"Remembered" list option keeps track of the last 9 files you used
Quitting with large files on the desktop is much faster; OA-Y quits without
saving any files
OA-Y ejects a 3.5" disk when in file lists
MouseText and Inverse typing allowed, including uppercase inverse
Mem.System program allows desktop lockout in //e, //c Ram card
Word Processor Features :
Dictionary copier copies dictionaries to Ram (optional). Spelling dictionaries
may be located in any disk or directory.
"QuickSpell" options allow better suggested spellings (4 levels).
Split screen editing; upper window freezes, lower window scrolls.
MouseText symbols for printer codes instead of carets.
Glossary allows auto-input from data base files or "canned" text.
Improved mail merge supports both fixed form and reformatted merge.
Full-featured outliner included.
Option to print odd or even pages.
Set a Marker 160 allows "comment" lines that don't print to paper.
Print to screen for preview shows WYSIWYG in the word processor.
Find and replace finds Tabs. Wild cards are allowed in find/replace.
Data Base Features :
60 categories per record, increased from 30 in AppleWorks 3.0.
Record selection rules can be imported from a report.
Select all records that are "changed" as well as equals, contains, begins with,
ends with, etc.
Date categories support years from 1000 to 9999 & century display.
Full relational capabilities, including imports from and exports to other files
based on matching criteria.
Spreadsheet-style formulas allow calculations between categories, including
date calculations and an alert message.
Categories may be formatted for min/max length, case, and limits to text,
numbers, or certain punctuation.
Masks allow entry of formatted text/numbers, such as (###) ###-####.
Glossaries allow data entry from pop-up lists or from data bases.
Formatting options allow right and left justification in R/A/C.
OA-A Sorts can be case sensitive or insensitive.
Lookups allow windowing to view related data in other data bases.
Number of reports increased to 30 from 20 in AppleWorks 3.0.
Reports may auto-sort before printing.
Reports printed to text files allow any delimiter.
Background text allowed in Single Record Layout and in reports.
Categories in Single Record Layout may be hidden in display.
Single Record Layout allows unlimited scrolling downward.
OA-B command displays single, double hires, and Print Shop graphics.
Date format is set for each data base. Optionally displays century.
Full support for dates beyond year 2000, with date calculations.

Spreadsheet Features:
@Date, @Today functions and Date formatting allow date math, with full support
for years beyond 2000.
Ditto function copies data, or formulas relatively.
Individual cell memos (cell notes).
Recalculate before saving or printing options.
Number of times to recalculate option (up to 99).
OA-F finds text, numbers, formulas, and cell notes.
During formula entry, functions can be selected from a pop-up list.
"3D" feature allows import of data from other spreadsheets.
New functions include @Left, @Right, @Upper, @Lower, @Mid, @Date, @Today,
@Find, @Join, and others.
@Alert function allows a calculation result to display a message.
Option to limit rows to either 9,999, or 999 for faster operation.
