For what it's worth, I've been messing with a lot of old junker Mac II's 
lately.  I just checked and the standard 1/2 AA socket from the Mac II and 
later is about a quarter inch too short for the holes in the ROM 01 
motherboard.  It will NOT fit.  :(

That's about what it costs for Mac folks, too.  RS sells the 1/2 AA for 
$10, and the local electronics chain (Altex) sells 'em for $8.25.  On the 
other hand, I've scored at least four spares from all the junk Mac 
equipment I've been playing with lately.
