If I understand correctly, the IIx was a code name for a follow up to the
IIc.  Unfortunately, no one could decide what it should be, so interest in
it waned and later killed.

The project was revived as the IIgs.  Hence why the IIgs's code name was
phoenix, "out of the ashes reborn, etc, etc"
