You can Shift-click or right-click in Netscape, too. This will permit getting
a Save window whatever the file type. So; a file the browser believes to be text
will not just be dumped to the screen.

http:// downloads

Under Netscape, right-clicking will not let you force a pure binary download.
Suppose you contact a site via http:// and right-click on Serpentine.dsk and
select Save Link As.

You will be able to pick the folder on your hard disk for the download; and, if
you like, you will be able to set a new name for the file on your hard disk. For
instance, Serpentine.dsk could be downloaded and written on your hard disk as
Serpentine.bin.

Whether the 'target' name is Serpentine.bin or Serpentine.dsk, the file will, most
likely, end up corrupted because, evidently, the site server tells your browser
that the file is text and this is how it will be downloaded.

Possibly, in the above situation, IE4 will let you force a binary download--
I don't know. Here is an experiment you can try:

Go to http://apple.cabi.net/pub/applegs/Games/8bit/

Right-click on Serpentine.dsk

Download the file

Check the exact length of the downloaded file-- you may need to right-click on the
file name on your hard disk and select "Properties" or something similar. If it is
143,360 bytes, you got a good download.

ftp://

As was mentioned before, getting into some popular sites via an ftp:// URL
may not always be easy; but, you are much more likely to get good downloads.
You can use your browser or run a separate ftp program. A very good ftp
program for PC's is WS_FTP95. (You can start up and use an ftp program even while
running your browser.) A good place to look for freeware and shareware ftp
programs is download.com.
