Just about everyone I know with an Apple II though that the Mac was
good for Apple...that the Apple II line was too limited in design and
that something different was needed. I didn't run across very many
Apple II users upset with Apple over the Mac until I regularly started
reading CSA2.

If the IIgs wasn't backwards compatible, I don't think any of the IIgs
purchasers I know (me included) would have bought one. I already had a
IIe, room for only one computer and lots of Apple II stuff. Being
able to run Appleworks was a major plus. Being able to run all the
games I already owned was an absolute necessity.
