You don't say what kind of laptop- in many cases, you have to remove
the  battery powering the cmos and discharge the remaining voltage or
wait overnight for the cmos to discharge it. Usually the cmos battery is
a small one, either a nicad rechargeable or more likely, a lithium. On
laptops, some are soldered to the motherboard, others are small coin
types.
