Re: What happened to Astro? (Re: trying to get an Apple II GS going for fun...)
Oh Hey... Yeah it's been a little bit since I posted. Now that I am
more or less up to speed with my IIGS system I have been doing less
posting and more working with my system. It's amazing how far I've
come in such a short while. What a great learning experience!
I've been surfing a lot through software these days, getting a feel
for it all and beginning to do some compilations on 3.5" floppy from
all these old Apple IIe 5.25" disks I unearthed in a thrift shop.
I at last received my system 5.0.4 system disks from mail-order and I
downloaded all the system 6.0.1 files and installed them on floppy as
well, so I have the complete OS library.
Unfortunately Supertimer I still have not been successful with
ShrinkIt using the method we outlined using ProType. So I looked
around on the FTP sites and found ShrinkIt in .sea and .bsc formats
and I am planning on trying to get it usable ASAP.
Other than that, I am looking at getting an additional 3.5" drive at
the earliest possible conveinience because it really is slow having to
switch disks all the time. With an additional drive, I could keep the
system disk sitting in one of the drives at all times so the system
can access it.
Long term projects include doing a lot of downloading GS software and
surfing all of it and also doing a NuLL modem connection with my PC.
Eventually I will want to get a hard drive for the system.
So the only real inhibitor I have right now is not having ShrinkIt
yet. I'll try doing stuff with those files in .sea and .bsc format as
soon as I can get on the Mac next week.
Thanks for checking up on the astroGS99 project!
P.S. Oh yeah, if anyone wants to get this thread into the FAQ's by all
means I think that would be great. In addition, I have compiled a
considerable knowledge base in MS Word documents which consist of
cut-and-paste collected juicy fragments of text harvested out of the
newsgroup thread and from out of relevant web pages and stuff, all to
do with various topics that I consider to be crucial. It's a bit
roughly patched together and is not a complete resource, but if
someone want me to zip them all together and email them to you by all
means no problem, only trouble is there are no credits supplied
because of the speed I put these references together... be forwarned.
The whole bunch of documents [.doc] is currently 250k unzipped.
Also: does everyone know that there are 2 complete IIGS manuals in
HTML at:
http://www.educate.net.au/~apple2/manuals/gsowners/ownersguide.html
and
http://www.educate.net.au/~apple2/manuals/gsgetstart/index.html
these people have worked a special magic getting those up.
Everywhere you look, it's all Science...
