Yup. Remember, the IIGS is 16-bit native. In order to run
8-bit Apple II software, the IIGS kicks into a built in IIe
emulation. GS/OS is the native IIGS operating system and
is 16-bit pure. The IIGS always functions optimally as a
16-bit unit and rather as a hack when running IIe software
in emulation mode. I'd use 16-bit software when possible.
Some older ones ran on floppy disks, so hard drive or no
is not a limitation that restricts one to 8-bit software run under
emulation.
The IIGS does funky stuff, basically lobotimizes itself, when
running 8-bit emulation. The clean 24-bit memory address
(16MB memory space, 8MB of which can be used for RAM)
is suddenly the hacked up banked switch IIe memory once
the emulation kicks in. I always wince a little when running
8-bit emulation on the IIGS. It seems such a waste of potential.
