GET Apple II OS from internet

Hey,

I discovered the question << How do I get OS-disks for my new apple IIx >>.
Than people are told they have to find a vendor or user group to get ProDos
etc.

But there should be an easier way, because apples have the build in basic.
One could write a little program for transfering disk-images from the pc to
an apple via serial connection. It would have to access the IO and write the
bytes to disk track by track.

Does anyone think that is possible? I am willing to implement the pc-side.
