You can certainly install System 5.0.4 on a hard drive, so that is one
option.

System 6.0.1 will run on 1.125M of RAM. It doesn't leave a lot of room for
applications, but it does work. For many uses, 2M of RAM is plenty, and 4M
is enough for almost anything on an Apple IIGS. 8M RAM is the max you can
put on the machine without a soldering iron. :)

The last time I looked, Alltech was selling RAM for about $130 for 4M. About
$250 for RAM and a hard drive would turn the Apple IIGS you have into a very
useable computer. It may not be worth that to you, but if you're going to do
much of anything on the machine, these two items are well worth the money.
