I thought I'd post this for discussion and comments to the readers of CSA2. I
received an email from a friend in Australia that's a good IIgs programmer -
who asked me if I'd be interested in his developing a GS/OS desktop
application, CDEV and/or NDA, etc. - that functions as a clone of what the IIgs
Pointless program does - as in allowing the IIgs to use TrueType fonts and save
them as standard IIgs fonts also, for use with other IIgs programs that can
take advantage of the TrueType fonts.
He told me that he'd like to do it as an educational project - to learn
about TrueType fonts with the IIgs and how they are displayed and used with
other IIgs programs. If he's successful with this project
he intends to release it as a freeware.
As of now - the commercial IIgs program - Pointless is the only such
CDEV/control panel program that allows the IIgs to use TrueType fonts
I told him in my email reply, that I thought it would be real nice for IIgs
users to have such a freeware alternative Pointless style utility program, as
he wants to develop and suggested that he go for it. He does monitors this
newsgroup and would be interested in reading your thoughts and comments
concerning the development and release of such a program.
Also, you would think that with the release of the IIgs desktop application
program - Fontpimp (that can convert PC TrueType fonts to the IIgs TrueType
font file format, very well) - there would have been a ton of PC TrueType font
conversions and releases for the IIgs users by now - but, so far...I've really
not seen very many done and/or made available to the IIgs public. I'm
wondering if there's actually still any interest in the use of TrueType fonts
with IIgs programs.
I look forward to all useful comments and discussions on these issues.
Cheers,
Tom
