I can't definitively deny this story, but I was working with WDC during the
development cycle and never saw or heard anything whatsoever that indicated
anyone but WDC worked on the chip. (Several companies and individuals,
including me, reviewed the design and made suggestions, but that's a far cry
from working on the chip.) In fact, there was so little interest outside WDC
that the chip almost died, even after it was ready to go into large scale
production.

Based on what I do know, I'd say this story is complete bull. Unless someone
at Atari actually produces real, documentary evidence or someone at WDC says
different, I'd assume it's a crank story.
