Yea, I found that out many a moon ago. It was general
knowledge on Genie at the time I was there and no one
recommended using it.

I have done this with a drive that was suffering from
severe sticktion problems once...opened up the drive
and gave the platters a boost and away it went. It
did last long enough to get all the data off of it.
As for what you should look for...that's an unknown.
It's hard to tell what's wrong with the drive without
actually being able to play around with it. It
could very easily be the drive motor which would make
it a lot more difficult to do anything with it.
